The nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll program was a series of 23 nuclear devices detonated by the United States between and at seven test sites on the reef itself, on the sea, in the air and underwater. The test weapons produced a combined fission yield of Mt of explosive.

Description:This made the use of a higher mass of the then scarce fusion fuel in the rear end of the secondary assembly ineffective and the overall design wasteful. The local residents were not told why. Nine days later, Senator Brien McMahon , who within a year would write the Atomic Energy Act and organize and chair the Congressional Joint Committee on Atomic Energy , made the first public proposal for such a test, but one designed to demonstrate the vulnerability, rather than survivability, of ships. The scientists and military authorities were shocked by the size of the explosion and many of the instruments they had put in place to evaluate the effectiveness of the device were destroyed. Amphibious craft were berthed on Bikini Island for similar purposes. In the Teller—Ulam design, the fission and fusion stages were kept physically separate in a reflective cavity.
